Casa Terracotta, a little village house set in the Appenine Mountains 60 kilometres west of the beautiful city of Parma, in the region of Emilia Romagna, Northern Italy. The area is stunningly beautiful, with high peaks and passes, steep valleys, forests, tiny stone villages clinging to the sides of the hills, and exciting hair-pin-bend roads taking you from one amazing view to the next ......
Get off the tourist track and experience real rural Italy - stay in an inexpensive self-catering holiday home in the localita of Masanti, a small un-spoilt mountain village with 24 friendly residents. The village nestles in the heart of the idyllic Apennine Mountains situated on the slopes of Monte Pelpi in the Ceno river valley. Masanti has beautiful views of the Ceno Valley, an abundance of wildlife, excellent walking, and has a famous source of natural fresh mineral water which is bottled by Norda in its plant nearby. The area is also famous for its Porcini or Cep mushrooms which are served in the many good restaurants in the area.
Casa Terracotta is a small village farmhouse built in the 1800s and now freshly renovated. It has its own little garden with table and chairs, and exclusive off-road parking adjacent to the property. You go up a flight of stone steps to the original door. Inside you find the lobby, the double bedroom with a stone arch believed to have been built in the 1700s, and the bathroom with shower, toilet, sink with electric shaver point and heated towel rail. Stairs lead up to the studio-style kitchen/diner/sitting area, with fridge, toaster, electric kettle, microwave, small oven with grill, and
twin electric hob and the all-important coffee percolator for making
your own home-brewed espresso.
The property is basically but comfortably furnished and has satellite TV and DVD.
Bed linen, towels, electricity and water are included. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the house.
Please note this accommodation is not suitable for people with mobility
difficulties due to the steep stairs. In addition, guests over six feet
tall may find it uncomfortable due to the low ceiling height in a couple of places.
Casa Terracotta is an ideal base for exploring the area if you are looking to purchase a holiday or new home in Italy. Suzanne and Pete have an excellent knowledge of property in the area. They are not estate agents themselves but have some fabulous opportunities listed on their site. The area could be the perfect choice as it is relatively unknown to non-Italians and as such is unspoilt and offers excellent value in a wide range of properties. They can also help with the bureaucratic processes of house buying or renovating your property.
There is a wealth of tourist information at Casa Terracotta, including train times, maps, local attractions and events.
Masanti itself is an excellent centre from which to discover a wider area covering day trips to: Milano, Parma (home of the famous violets, cheese and ham), the Italian Riviera (Portafino, Chiavari, Sestri Lavanti, Cinque Terra, Santa Margareta), Bologna (home of good food and the world's oldest University), Pisa, Florence or Genova with its fantastic aquarium.
If you have an artistic temperament then the opportunities for photography or taking out your easel and painting, be it scenery or old buildings, are numerous. Because the area is so rural and not over-developed, the opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting (particularly bird watch) are especially excellent. Finally, for those brave enough, you can have a bracing swim in the swirling waters of the rivers Ceno or Taro.
There is an excellent train service out of nearby Borgo Val Di Taro which includes intercity trains.
